Antique Composition Snow Baby Doll Jointed 5"

A rather unusual composition Snow Baby doll, likely German based on the style of the facial painting and body shape. He is jointed at the shoulders and hips and dressed in a white felt snow suit, trimmed in red yarn and traces of what was once glittery trim. We believe the doll to be unmarked; the snowsuit can be pulled down to nearly the middle of the back with care and no mark is visible.

This type of Snow Baby would appear to be rather rare. Most are constructed of bisque and very few of those are jointed. A full composition doll dressed in the Snow Baby costume seems to be impossible to find. We have wondered if this is a one-off, perhaps made by a crafty doll lover and not as issued by the maker. In any event, the fabric is very old and worn, consistent with the presumed early 20th century date we believe likely for the production of the doll.

The facial features have been painted with great detail, in a manner often seen on German composition dolls of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The body of the doll is quite sturdy, in the style of a chubby toddler. As the clothing has been sewn onto place, we are not able to show the doll undressed. Note the rather large shape to the head of the doll, a bit unusual for this sort of small composition doll. He has molded hair.

The outfit is in fact in 5 pieces; the hood is stitched onto the top, which is in turn sewn onto the pants. The booties are individually stitched onto the feet. There was at one point plush cotton trim at the wrists, waist, feet and hood. All but small traces have vanished over the years. Glitter was glued onto several places on the costume and has also all but disappeared. The collar of the snowsuit attached to each side of the jaw, likely when the glitter trim was originally added.

We consider this a rare entry in the Snow Baby category and are confident that the discerning doll collector will cherish him.
